Town Hall January 6th 1875.
Present the Mayor with Aldermen Smith, Henderson, Galvin, Conley and Bedford.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
Letter read from Messrs Giblin and Marie asking the Council to lay drainpipes through their property in Wilson Street. It was resolved on the motion of Aldermen Galvin and Bedford, that the letter be received and considered at a future time.
A report was brought up from Finance Committee showing accounts paid under votes of appropriation amounting to £62/12/7, and recommending the payment of further accounts amounting to £85/12/9. The report was adopted on the motion of Aldermen Henderson and Conley.
The Council thereupon when into Committee to consider tenders for Kerbing and guttering in Wellington Street.
On the Council resuming, the Mayor reported that the Committee recommend that Mr Selby’s tender at the rate of 7 shillings per yard be accepted. The report was adopted.
Alderman Smith wished to know if a newspaper called for “witness” is supplied to the reading room and if so does the Council pay for it. The Mayor reported that it was not paid for by the Council and also instructed the Clerk to write to the proprietors requesting them to discontinue the delivery of said paper to the Newtown Free Library.

The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The Municipal Lists for the year 1875 — 1876 were laid on the table and applications for insertion of names considered and added to the aforesaid Lists. The Mayor signed the Lists as required by law.
1. Letter read from Mr Mills asking the Council to consider the desirability of establishing a Volunteer Fire Brigade and providing other means for extinguishing fires. The letter was received and postponed for consideration until a further date.
2. From Mr John Hamblin drawing the Council’s attention to the accumulation of rubbish in sundry places in the Newtown Road. On the motion of Aldermen Galvin and Henderson the letter was received and the Clerk instructed to reply to same. The Clerk was also instructed to write to the Cook’s River Road Trust, requesting them to have the said rubbish removed and the gutters cleaned at least once a week.
A report was brought up from the Finance Committee showing accounts paid under votes of appropriation amounting to £74/17/0, and recommending the payment of further accounts amounting to £15/18/6. The report was adopted on the motion of Aldermen Henderson and Conley.
