Council Chambers 5th February 1874.

Election of Mayor:

Present Aldermen Bailey, Henderson, Conley, Galvin, Fallick, Cozens, Smith, Bedford and Goodsell.

The Council Clark occupied the chair. The declarations of office of the newly elected Aldermen was laid on the table.

The acting Chairman read section 42 of the Municipalities Act, referring to the annual election of Mayor.

Moved by Alderman Conley, seconded by Alderman Bedford, “that the Mayor be elected by open voting”. Carried.

Moved by Alderman Galvin, seconded by Alderman Henderson, “that the Mayor be elected with open doors”. Carried.

Moved by Alderman Conley, seconded by Alderman Goodsell, “that Alderman Bailey be elected Mayor for the current Municipal year”. Carried unanimously.

The acting Chairman declared Alderman Bailey duly elected Mayor for the current Municipal year.

The Mayor returned thanks for the honour conferred by elected him for the fourth time to the Mayoral Chair.

Council Chambers 17th February 1874.

Present the Mayor and Aldermen Fallick, Smith, Galvin, Bedford, Conley, Goodsell and Cozens.

The declarations of office of Mayor and Mr Auditor Pierce were laid on the table.

Minutes:

The minutes of previous meeting read, and confirmed on the motion of Aldermen Conley and Fallick.

Correspondence:

1. Letter from the Department of Lands with tracing showing the alignment of Bligh Street in the Municipalities of Newtown and Camperdown.

2. Letter from the Department of Lands with tracing showing the alignment of that portion of Enmore Road situate between Francis and Juliet streets, and stating that it is now in the charge of the Municipal Council of Newtown.

Moved by Alderman Fallick, seconded by Alderman Galvin, “that both letters be received and placed with the records of the Council”. Carried.

3. From the Council Clerk, Camperdown, asking the co-operation and assistance of this Council in forming a volunteer Fire Brigade.

Treasurer:

Moved by Alderman Conley, seconded by Alderman Bedford, “that Alderman Galvin be appointed Treasurer for the current Municipal year”. Carried.

Committees:

Moved by Alderman Conley, seconded by Alderman Fallick, “that Aldermen Fallick, Smith, Henderson, Conley and the Mayor be appointed the Finance Committee for the current Municipal year”. Carried.

Moved by Alderman Smith, seconded by Alderman Cozens, “that Aldermen Conley, Cozens, Bedford, Goodsell and the mover be appointed the Committee for Works during the present year.

Moved by Alderman Fallick, seconded by Alderman Conley, “that the Library and Bylaws Committees each consist of the whole Council”. Carried.

Valuers:

Moved by Alderman Conley, seconded by Alderman Bedford, “that Messrs Robert N. Banks, and George Langhorne be appointed valuers to this Borough during the current Municipal year.”

Amendment, moved by Alderman Galvin, seconded by Alderman Smith, “that tenders be called for a second valuer to act in conjunction with the Council Clerk”.

The amendment was put and lost. The motion was put and carried.

Moved by Alderman Fallick, seconded by Alderman Conley, “that the sum of £20 be voted for payment of such valuers”. Carried.

Moved by Alderman Fallick, seconded by Alderman Conley, “that the valuers be instructed to prepare and submit to this Council a valuation of all rateable property within this Borough”. Carried.

Moved by Alderman Fallick, seconded by Alderman Smith, “that the Committee for Works report upon the best mode of fencing the land recently purchased for a Pound”. Carried.

Moved by Alderman Smith, seconded by Alderman Cozens, “That the Mayor apply to the Council’s solicitor for all documents relating to the land purchased for a Pound “. Carried.
