Present, the Mayor, with Aldermen Conley, Abbott, Neale and Smith.
Minutes:
The minutes of the previous meeting were read in and confirmed.
Correspondence:
1. From Mr George Green to the Inspector of Nuisances respecting the drainage opposite his premises, with that officer’s report thereon. Received.
2. From the Under-Secretary for Finance notifying payment into the Council’s bank of £236/8/2, Endowment for the past half year. Received.
3. From Mr John White asking the Council to repair the footpath adjacent to his property. Left in the hands of the Mayor on the motion of Aldermen Abbott and Neale.
4. From Mr I. T. Wakely, soliciting the support of the Council towards the foundation of an opposition line of omnibuses. Received.
5. From the Inspector of Nuisances reporting on an alleged nuisance at Mr Doyle’s property. Received.
6. From the Inspector of Nuisances resigning his appointment in consequence of his removal from the Borough. Resignation received on the motion of Aldermen Abbott and Smith.
7. From Mr T. West offering to supply unbroken white metal in the Enmore Ward at seven shillings per ton. On the motion of Aldermen Neale and Conley the offer was accepted.
A deputation from the Marrickville Council was introduced, seeking to make a permanent agreement with this Council relative to the repairs etc. of the boundary streets. After considerable debate it was moved by Alderman Abbott, “that the further consideration of the subject be postponed until Tuesday 28 instant, at eight o’clock PM, and that the Marrickville Council be invited to attend”. Seconded by Alderman Smith and carried.
The deputation returned thanks for the courteous manner they had been received, and withdrew.
Works:
Alderman Abbott, as a member of the Works Committee (in absence of the chairman) verbally reported that the Committee, having inspected Mr Tufts property in Australia Street, recommended that his application to have the footway Kerbed and guttered be not acceded to, until the Council is in a better financial position, so as to do both sides at the same time. Alderman Conley then moved in accordance with previous notice duly given, “that £10 be voted to kerb and gutter in front of Mr Tufts houses”. Seconded by Alderman Smith, and carried by the casting vote of the Mayor.
Charges for railway carriage of blue metal.
Alderman Smith obtained permission of the Council to have the consideration of this matter made an order of the day for the next meeting.
A document drawn up by this Council for transmission to the Philadelphia Exhibition was then considered, and finally adopted. Resolved that the Mayor be authorised to have the same engrossed and forwarded.
Questions.
Alderman Smith asked whether any communication had been received from the Metropolitan Transit Commissioners respecting the proposed removal of the omnibus stand. The Mayor replied in the negative.

Present, the Mayor, with Aldermen Conley, Smith, Neale, Galvin, Abbott and Fallick.
Correspondence:
1. From St Peters Municipal Council, requesting this Council to appoint a time for the Aldermen of both Councils to meet at May Street, for conferring as to the proposed repairs of the Street. Moved by Alderman Abbott, and seconded by Alderman Neale, “that the whole Council form a deputation to meet St Peters Council at May Street on Tuesday 12th October at four o’clock PM”. Carried.
2. From Mr J. Bullen, the working overseer of the Borough, applying, on behalf of himself and labourers employed under him, for a reduction in the hours of labour (from 10 to 8 hours), or an increase of wages in lieu of thereof. Moved by Alderman Abbott, “that the overseer’s wages be increased to £2/10/0 per week, and that the labourers wages be increased to six shillings and eight pence per day, for 8 hours work”. The motion was seconded by Alderman Fallick.
An amendment was then moved by Alderman Smith, “that on and half to the first October, the overseer be paid £2/10/0 per week, and the labourers seven shillings and sixpence per day, or 10 hours work, with leave to discontinue work on Saturdays at one o’clock”. Seconded by Alderman Conley.
The votes being equal, the Mayor used his casting vote in favour of the original motion, which was declared carried.
3. From Mr I. T. Josephson, asking permission of the Council to cut down a portion of the Edgeware Road, adjoining his property. Resolved on the motion of Aldermen Fallick and Abbott, “that a reply be sent stating that a conference on the subject will take place with the Marrickville Council”.
Boundary roads.
In accordance with the minutes of previous meeting, a deputation of the Aldermen of Marrickville again attended at this meeting, to confer respecting the joint repair of boundary roads.
After a long discussion it was moved by Alderman Smith, and seconded by Alderman Galvin, “that this Council meet the Marrickville Council on Tuesday 12th October, at half past 4 PM at May Street”. Carried.
The deputation, having returned thanks for the courteous reception they had met with, then retired.
Finance.
The Mayor brought up a report from the Finance Committee showing accounts paid by them, £139/2/9, and recommending payment of other accounts amounting to £28/4/6. Moved by Alderman Fallick, seconded by Alderman Neale, “that the report be adopted”. Carried.
Motions pursuant to notice.
By Alderman Abbott, “that a sum not exceeding £10 be voted for repairing foot paths on Newtown Road”. Seconded by Alderman Neale, and carried.
