Town Hall, Newtown, May 4th 1875.

Present, the Mayor with Aldermen Cozens, Smith, Neale, Henderson and Fallick.

Minutes: the minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed.


1. A letter from the secretary of the Sydney City and Suburban Sewage and Health Board, asking the Mayor for plan of this municipal district, showing the position of the sewers and drains. Moved by Alderman Fallick, seconded by Alderman Henderson, “that the letter be received and the request therein complied with”. Carried.

2. From Mr J. Garretty drawing the attention of the Council to damage done to his property through the overflow of water from the Stanmore Road. Moved by Alderman Fallick, seconded by Alderman Cozens, “that the complaint be not recognised by this Council as the property referred to is not within the Borough”. Carried.

Works Committee report.

A report was brought up from the Works Committee recommending that the surface drain in Edgeware Road be put in repair; and also that a portion of the Enmore Road situate between Stanmore Road and Juliet Street be put in repair. The report was adopted on the motion of Aldermen Fallick and Neale.

Order of the day.

Mr Josephson’s offer relative to the sale of an allotment of land to this Council on certain conditions, postponed from 6th ultimo. Moved by Alderman Smith, seconded by Alderman Fallick, “that this Council decline to accept the offer”. Carried.

Tender for white metal.

The Council resolved into Committee of the whole to resume consideration of tender for white metal.

On the Council resuming the Mayor reported that Mr West’s tender of 200 tons unbroken white metal of best quality be accepted at seven shillings and sixpence per ton.

The report was adopted on the motion of Aldermen Henderson and Neale.

Appeals against assessment.

Messrs King, May and Halloran, the only appellants, were present, and having been invited by the Mayor to state their objections against the assessments, the Council having heard the same agreed to the following reductions. Mr May from 23 shillings to 18 shillings. Mr King from 23 shillings to 20 shillings and from 15 shillings to 12 shillings. Mr Halloran 54 shillings to 46 shillings.

The appellants thereupon withdrew their appeals.

Moved by Alderman Fallick, seconded by Alderman Henderson, “that three months leave of absence be granted to Alderman Galvin in consequence of ill health”. Carried.

The Mayor brought under the notice of the Council that the Newtown Volunteer Fire Company wished the Council to erect a Fire Bell in a suitable place.

The Mayor was authorised to have the same done provided the Brigade procure the Bell.
