Town Hall, Newtown, 7th December 1875.

Present, the Mayor with Aldermen Conley, Neale, Henderson, Abbott and Smith.

Minutes:

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Correspondence:

1 from Mr John Garretty, complaining of the drainage of water through his property at North Kingston and asking the Council to remedy the same of forming and gutter at the other side of Bishopsgate Street. Received.

2. From the Hon secretaries of Mr S. C. Brown’s Banquet Committee, thanking the Council for the free use of the Town Hall rooms for holding the said banquet. Received.

3. From the Registrar of the Metropolitan Transit Commissioners, in reply to a letter from this Council, stating that the matter of appointing a public omnibus stand in Newtown will receive due attention. Received.

4. From the Principal Under Secretary calling the Council’s attention to the necessity of appointing a place as a depot for the deposit of night soil in accordance with the “Nuisances Prevention Act of 1875, section 20”. Received.

Orders of the day.

1. The consideration of Mr Wansbrough’s letter referring to the drain at the rear of Windsor Terrace. Moved by Alderman Smith, seconded by Alderman Henderson, “that the matter be postponed until a reply be received from Mr Holdsworth respecting the proposed formation of the lane behind Windsor Terrace”. Carried.

2. Consideration of “Nuisances Prevention Act 1875”. Moved by Alderman Smith, seconded by Alderman Conley, “that this Council agrees to carry out the provisions of this Act, to the best of its ability, and that the whole Council form a board for the purpose”. Carried.

Moved by Alderman Smith, seconded by Alderman Henderson, “that the Mayor with Aldermen Abbott, Neale, Conley and the mover form a Sub Committee to frame a code of By-laws”. Carried.

The Mayor stated that he had received a requisition from a number of influential gentleman in the locality, asking him to call a public meeting to consider the action of the Government in abolishing the Newtown and Cook’s River Road Trust, and that he had decided to convene such meeting, at the Town Hall, Newtown, on Monday, 13th December, at a o’clock PM.
