Present, the Mayor, with Aldermen Conley, Cozens, Smith, Henderson and Abbott.
Minutes:
The minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed.
Correspondence:
1. From Messrs Humphries and others, complaining of a nuisance arising from Mr Perry’s newly erected forge, and requesting that the same may be remedied. Moved by Alderman Henderson, seconded by Alderman Cozens, “that the letter be referred to the Committee of Works for their report”. Carried.
2. From Mr E. Colwell, soliciting the Council for an increase of wages as carter. Moved by Alderman Henderson, seconded by Alderman Conley, “that the application stand over until next meeting for consideration”. Carried.
Omnibus stand.
Moved by Alderman Smith and seconded by Alderman Henderson, “that a deputation from this Council and the Trustees of Cook’s River Road, wait on the Transit Commissioners, to urge upon them the desirability of removing the omnibus stand from its present position”. Carried.
Water supply.
The Mayor having reported to the Council the result of an interview he had with the Right Worshipful the Mayor of Sydney respecting the probability of securing a supply of water for Newtown, it was moved by Alderman Abbott, and seconded by Alderman Conley, “that the Sydney Corporation be requested to supply this Borough with water”. Carried unanimously.

Present, the Mayor, with Aldermen Conley, Henderson, and Galvin, Cozens, Smith, Abbott and Fallick. An apology was received from Alderman Neale who was absent through illness.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
Correspondence:
1. Letter read from Mr John Yard, asking the Council to kerb and gutter in front of his premises in Alice Street. Moved by Alderman Smith, seconded by Alderman Conley, “that a reply be sent stating that as the Street in question has not yet been aligned the request cannot be complied with”. Carried.
2, 3, 4, 5 & 6. From several residents of Mary Street complaining of a nuisance arising from the drainage of that Street. Moved by Alderman Smith, seconded by Alderman Conley, “that the complainants be informed that efforts are being made to remedy the said nuisance”. Carried.
7. From Mr D. Annesley, complaining of neglect on the part of the scavenger, causing a nuisance. Left in the hands of the Mayor.
8. From St Peters Council requesting another appointment to be made for both Councils to meet at May Street relative to repair of said Street. Moved by Alderman Smith, seconded by Alderman Cozens, “that the whole Council meet St Peters Council on Friday 5th November, at 4 PM”. Carried.
Finance.
A report was brought up from the Finance Committee showing amounts paid since last report, £116/4/3, and recommending payment of further accounts amounting to £108/14/0. Moved by Alderman Henderson, seconded by Alderman Conley, “that the report be received and adopted “. Carried.
The Mayor laid on the table for the inspection of the Council, a description of the Borough, which had been written and framed, for transmission to the Philadelphia Exhibition. Moved by Alderman Abbott, seconded by Alderman Fallick, “that the thanks of the Council be accorded to Mr Ewens for his kindness in preparing the same”. Carried.
Order of the day.
Consideration of Mr Colwell’s application for an increase of wages as carter. Resolved, “that as Mr Colwell is under contract to the Council, his application be not entertained”.
Motions pursuant to notice.
1. By Alderman Galvin, “that the resolution of Council dated 28th September last, with reference to the increase of wages and reduction of hours of labour for the working men, be rescinded”. Seconded by Alderman Cozens. Carried.
2. By Alderman Conley, “that on and after 30th October 1875, the working overseer be paid £2/5/0 per week, and the labourers seven shillings per day of 10 hours, leaving work on Saturday’s at 1 PM”. Seconded by Alderman Galvin.
Amendment moved by Alderman Abbott, seconded by Alderman Fallick, “that from the 30th October the overseer be paid £2/5/0 per week, and the men six shillings and eight pence per day, for 8 hours leaving work at 1 PM on Saturday”.
Amendment negatived, and original motion carried.
The remaining business was postponed to the next meeting of Council.
